lend me your ear. I come not to praise my computer, but to

As some of you may remember from my last (oh so long ago) post, I have been having some a few metric shit tonnes of problems with my computer since ... April. Huh, didn't realize it's been that long. No wonder I'm cranky.

So, after having myself wiped forever from the annals of Googlemail, losing part of my data, recovering some of my data, and generally being held hostage to the whim of the whirring monster on my desk ... I brought the damn thing in again to have it repaired. Still under warranty, good. Will ghost the hard drive I didn't have a chance to back up again after the latest melt down, good. Shouldn't be that difficult says the tech guy, good.

One month later, I get the computer back. The ghost of my hard drive? Truly invisible. My baby is wiped cleaner than an obsessive compulsive's kitchen. New main board, says the paper. Let's run Vista for the first time, says the screen. Okay, so I do. Then, I start tracking down all my links to the interwebs again. I put back some of the data I have on my stick drive. I start setting new high scores on Minesweeper. Not the greatest thing ever, but hey, we can rebuild.

Then, tonight, I get home, try to boot up the damn thing, and ... wait for it ... yep, you guessed it. The SAME DAMN THING happened again. I am not a happy camper. I'm guessing the problem wasn't the board. Or the power supply (which I also replaced). Or the fan.

At least it's still under warranty. And I think that after I get through with the tech guys at the fine establishment where I purchased this fucking lemon they'll be happy to give me a new computer if I promise to leave without completing their eviseration.

But if they aren't? We're gonna be pouring tonnes of concrete on site so I have the perfect place to hide their bodies. Right next to the carcass of this damn computer.

Oh, my dear! I have an old XP machine that you can use if you need a loaner.

If it's not the motherboard, not the power supply or the fan, hmmm? Are you seeing any lights? Any sound when you attempt to start up?

I got it working again this time, but who knows what will happen next? I'm going to bring home the work laptop tomorrow. Hell, I've been using it at home for the last three weeks anyway.

So, here's what happens when I try to boot up the piece of junk (which is my new affectionate name for my baby). I get the power light, I get a black screen, I get no wireless light and I get no hard drive light. I do, however, get all my Quiklaunch lights. Go figure. The fan hums, the thing heats up, but it just goes nowhere.

And I only got the stupid thing back on Sunday. You can only imagine how loud I cursing right now. Aarghhhhhhhhh!

So, yeah, me and the retail outlet are gonna be discussing this. Bastards! But thank you for the offer of a loaner. :)

No wireless or hard drive light suggests that the problem is either on the board OR in the connections. The fact that it's intermittent makes me think that the connections for the hard drive's power are not secured, properly.

Grrrrrr to the store, indeed!

So, I contacted the store. They tell me they have to repair the same thing three times before they will replace it because it is "too new". This is me, laughing hysterically. And thumping my head on my desk. Sometimes, I wonder about tech repair people.

O_o

Wow. It's like they interned at the U's Computer Services desk! No, scratch that: they're at least responsive whereas the Computer Services people are just plain surly.

Oh, and I have a prospective M.A. applicant for next year who's wanting to do a thesis about late nineteenth century images of manhood and empire as revealed in journals by and articles aimed at Victorian Englishmen. What fun if she actually comes to LU, eh?

Yeah, LU's tech people win (lose?) hands down for general unhelpfulness.

Oooooh, sounds interesting. Which, oddly enough, is still true after all this time and all that immersion in standards of manliness and nationalism. Huh, maybe I coulda finished the dissertation in that area. Oh, wait, it was never the topic that drove me round the bend ... it was the rest of it. But if she does come to LU, we shall all have to do coffee/tea/beverage of your choice one day.

*cue impressive intonation*

I am the ghost of the girl who used to write here. One day, I shall write again.

Mwahahahahahahahahahah!

BTW, don't look behind the curtain, I'm not really there.

The only shoes I'm worrying about now are the ones for the horse (see entry from tonight). At least the horse won't need a new motherboard.

Yes. Go. Back up data. Backing up is a good thing. We won't discuss how I've misplaced the stick drive that has a bunch of the data that I DID back up. Nope, not mentioning at all.

Hey chickie! Sorry for not responding sooner, but the life, she is busy.

How's it going? How's Portland? How's everything? You know, not to put too fine a point on it.
