Holy Shit! I bought a horse

So, um, yeah, we bought a horse on Saturday. She's a four year old, bay mare. Green broke. Thoroughbred. Her registered name is Majestic Jet. We changed her barn name to Maia. Pictures under the cut.

Turning is a skill she hasn't quite mastered yet.

She's 16.1 and such a dark bay, but she'll grow a little bit more and fill out a lot.

She is, however, quite willing. She'd never even seen a jump before Saturday, and she took it in stride. Literally, as she simply trotted over the cavaletti. But hey, it's a start!

Conga rats, my dear! She looks a bit underweight but sweet in expression. How tall is she?

Thanks! You'll have to come and see her once she gets to our barn.

She's 16.1 but she should finish a little taller. And yes, she's definitely underweight right now. They've had her for almost two years, and she's only been ridden around half a dozen times. That's crazy for a thoroughbred. They get skinnier the less they work.

Am has a feeding regimen worked up for her. It includes a lot of sweet feed, some high fat/high fibre, and something called Ultimate Finish that may just bankrupt me. As if the purchase of a horse didn't do that already.

As my dad said of my horse, "The purchase isn't the problem, it's the upkeep that kills you." Board, vet bills, farrier charges, blankets, boots, fleecies to prevent the halter from rubbing the coat, grooming equipment and all the other little things? They add up.

But it should be fun. And she has a lovely name!

Sadly, the child managed to spend my money on all of those things except vet and farrier before we ever owned a horse. Between the lease on the palomino that she rode last fall and earlier this year, and the garage full of stuff, I feel like we must have owned a horse for much longer than two days.

Bwahahaaa ha!

Mike says I'm not to let word drop to my girls what you've done or I'm doomed for sure. I don't know. I still have my old tack box with lots of gear AND my old saddle to boot!

There is always room at the barn, you know. And don't you give Mike my phone number!

Mwahahahahahahahah!

Come see the horsie Sunday?
