due South snippet

Because I need another fandom like I need another hole in my head ...

First, I have been a fan of due South since the pilot. I have been reading in the fandom for a couple of years now. But I stayed away from writing until now.

Second, I had to write this because I've been hearing parts of this in my head for days now, and it's interfering with the SGA story I'm trying to write. It might also be a trial run for the much longer due South story that is taking up much larger parts of my brain.

Third, this is a somewhat experimental piece. First all dialogue piece I've written. Hope it works.

Title: Made for Walking
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: G
Summary: Ray has a question

"Fraser?"

"Yes, Ray?"

"I got a question."

"Yes, Ray?"

"It's about the boots."

"The boots?"

"You know, the Mountie boots."

"Ah, the Mountie boots. Their more proper name is Strathcona boots, after the Strathcona Horse, a Canadian unit in the Boer War. They were designed to be both a cavalry boot, and a boot suitable for walking. The design was far superior to both the previous cavalryman's rigid boot and the infantryman's puttee. A thinner sole made it more practicable for walking and the addition of laced gussets, both at the ankle and the calf, made the boot exceptionally comfortable."

"Yeah, yeah, it's those laced things I'm talking about."

"Talking about, Ray?"

"You know, asking about. Like, how do you get those things unlaced? And how come I can never watch you do it?"

"Well, Ray, the removal of Strathcona boots is a closely guarded secret of the RCMP. In fact, one of the last tests to be passed at Depot is the ceremonial unlacing of the boots. Careers have hinged on less, Ray."

"You're not gonna tell me, are ya Frase?"

"No, Ray, sadly, I am not going to tell you. If I did, I would be forced to kill you."

"Okay. Hey, Fraser?"

"Yes, Ray?"

"Can I get a g'night kiss?"

"Yes, Ray."

Aren't they just, though? :D

*expires from the adorableness* Like, seriously. Too, too cute and just funny and neat and just the right length for what it is, I think. It's a lovely little slice of an idea and I think you pulled it off well. The Fraser voice especially sounds good.

Thanks!

I think it's sometimes harder to get the voices right in a shorter piece. Less time to paper over the mistakes, perhaps? Hmm, maybe that's why the Fraser voice hits the right notes ... he says more (as usual). *g*

And can I say that I am expiring from the hotness of your icon? Guh!

How can I avoid everyone's favourite Mountie? (Although I did try, for years even)

Oh, and congrats on getting your grades in. Yay you!

I love Fraser being all mysteriously smartass, and you've got him down perfectly here. Great first effort!

Thank you kindly.

Now, if I could just get Fraser to shut up long enough to work on my Ray voice. *g*

Too cute, really!

Okay, I have to 'fess up here. So, I was at a formal ceremony, with RCMP representation present. And I sidled up to the constable. And I asked him about the boots. And he beamed a huge, gracious, kinda hot Mountie smile at me. And he said, "I'd tell you about the secrets of the boots, but then I'd have to kill you. They're our best kept secret."

I LOVE Mounties.

Glad you liked the snippet.

Glad you liked it, and the Fraser voice. Of course, now that he's started talking to me, he won't shut up. *eg*

Heh. This made me giggle. And your Fraser's delicious.

Very funny. And I'm going to join in the general appreciation of your Fraser-voice. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Hmmm. General appreciation of my Fraser-voice. I wonder if it comes naturally to wordy Canadians? *eg*

Thanks for the kind words. And, yeah, you can very likely expect more from me. *counts the fandom holes in my head ... sure always room for more*
