The Making of a Fan

So, I've been wondering, is it possible to be a fan of a television show you've never actually watched? Can you call yourself a fan based on reading fan fiction, commentary and transcripts of episodes? Because I think that's happened to me and Stargate Atlantis.
When the season began, I was not moved enough by the premise to order extra pay channels just to watch one show. Heck, I pay too much for tv I don't watch already. But then ... oh then ... I found some fan fic, and it was good. Then, I found some more. Then, I felt compelled to start reading spoilers and episode summaries. The rest, as they say, was history. Reading led to messageboards, messageboards led to fic lists and sites, one site led to the next, lurking soon followed.
Now, I find myself happily mired in a fandom for a show I have never watched, and I can only stir up a smidgeon of intellectual confusion at this. Heck, I'm at the point where I am likely as big a fan of Pegasus B as I am of the show. You know, the show I haven't seen?
Oh well, guess it's time for the next step ... writing my own Atlantis fic. Ah, the path of addiction.

Re: Yep its possible.
Date: 2005-03-16 03:38 am (UTC)While I have to agree with you on characterization, there is an indefinable something about watching the eps. I like to actually see and hear the actors as they develop the characters I have come to love so much. Although, I have to admit, I loved McKay even before Atlantis. :)
I'm glad you liked my fic. I'm working on more as we speak. I'm really, truly trying to get some fluffy stuff written, but I'm not sure my Shep muse is gonna cooperate. Oh well, I guess I might have to whump him some more. But he's gonna have to wait until I finish teaching tomorrow. :D
